Will Courtney
Interview
Will is the lead singer/ guitarist of Brothers and Sisters – Interview by Clint (with help from Mark)
CM: I saw you on your last tour. Do you guys have tuners?
WC: We do, but I strongly advise against their use. I like to keep it real. I like to be at the mercy of the guitar.
CM: Obviously you are a huge Sally Field fan since you named your band after her TV show. Did you pick “Brothers and Sisters” because “Smokey and the Bandits” was taken?
WC: I gave Sally a copy of our record when I was on the set of one of her osteoporosis commercials for Boniva. Next thing I know, she’s starring in a new show and our band website was down at the bottom of the Google search results.
CM: You remind me of a young Paul Stanley with a beard. Is that weird?
WC: Well, I’m not as gay, but I do get a lot of compliments on my hairy chest.
CM: Do you think Jimi Hendrix is overrated? People like Vinnie Vincent could play WAY faster than Hendrix ever could.
WC: I always preferred Vai and his little guitar with the hole handle.
CM: Do you use phrases like “balls to the wall rock’n roll” to describe your music?
WC: Especially our song “Old Love Letters”
CM: Who has better album covers: Molly Hatchet or Manowar?
WC: Molly Hatchet. After years of seeing those covers I was surprised when I actually heard them. They were making records back in a time before you could preview the song on iTunes or YouTube. I bet there were a lot of D&D kids that were very confused when they heard “Flirtin With Disaster”.
CM: Would you consider Nirvana a “Power Trio”?
WC: Definitely.
CM: You’ve lived in three big music cities – L.A., Austin and Nashville. I have also lived in all three: Are you following me? ARE YOU A STALKER?
WC: I’m trying to get as far away from you as I can by retracing your steps and living in places I know you won’t want to live again.
CM: When you go to Guitar Center you see all these 80′s pointy headstock guitars, but nobody is playing 80′s pointy headstock metal..What the fuck is up with that?
WC: I know!!! I’m just glad they’re still on the wall. When I save up my money I am gonna buy the Dimebag Darrell Washburn with the Rebel Flag design and the neon yellow Steve Vai Ibanez with the handle hole.
CM: Have you ever owned a Twisted Sister Album?
WC: YES. Stay Hungry. On tape.
CM: Do you have anything you want to promote? New CD? Website? Blog?
WC: Brothers and Sisters are on hiatus for a while. I’m in Nashville and am about to begin recording a new record. I guess I should promote my name, “Will Courtney”. Please help me promote it.
CM: What 5 obscure or under appreciated bands would you recommend people check out?
I tend to listen to music that was generally recorded before I was born, so I’ll list some good older artists/bands that need some shout outs. Here are 5 from between 1970-1975:
Hookfoot
Eggs Over Easy
Unicorn – (UK band Produced by David Gilmour)
Cherokee
Jim Ford
Will’s Top 5
This is IMPOSSIBLE, but here are 5 CDs that I’ve listened to more than 100 times-
The Beatles – Rubber Soul

-
J.J. Cale – Naturally

-
Randy Newman – Good Old Boys

-
Bob Dylan – Nashville Skyline

-
Neil Young – On the Beach

I like this interview. I want a Brothers and Sisters ‘ shirt. love, jason jerome gentry
