The Nymphs
Bio
This band originated in the Los Angeles club scene around volatile vocalist Inger Lorre (Born Laurie Wenning), a former model from New Jersey, with a line-up that eventually stabilized with drummer Alex Kirst, guitarists Jet Freedom and Sam Merrick, and bassist Cliff D. The Nymphs signed to Geffen Records in 1989, bolstered by a wave of hype that suggested that the band were a female-fronted Guns N’Roses (in truth their sound owed more to Lou Reed, the Stooges and Patti Smith). A period of limbo ensued as the band fought to record a debut on their own terms. Tales of drug abuse, rehabilitation and mental hospitals escalated as the tension of being contractually prohibited from playing live took its toll. These problems were exacerbated when producer Bill Price was commandeered by Guns N’ Roses to mix their Use Your Illusion albums. Lorre expressed the feelings of the Nymphs by crushing five poppies (to represent the band members) and urinating on them, all on top of the desk of her label’s A&R chief. Nymphs eventually emerged in February 1992 to a fanfare of critical praise; it was a darkly enthralling set that mixed punk and grunge with Lorre’s lyrical images of death, drugs and sex (often drawn from personal experience). Subsequent live shows were of variable quality, with internal tensions abounding due to Lorre’s eccentric behaviour, and following A Practical Guide To Astral Projection, it was no surprise when the Nymphs disintegrated spectacularly on stage in Miami in September of that same year. – Encyclopedia of Popular Music
